January is our family's annual month of prayer and today when I woke up with this quote on my mind and its been stuck all day:

"The magical equation about giving is that the more you give, the more you actually get."

I'm always grateful for the fact that my dad and I both share a love for photography. In the midst of all the projects I work on (TNG newspaper, the [y] network, First Choice) Our informal conversations and desire to exceed expectations always push us to collaborate and find resources to better our craft. I'm a Dreamer & a Believer

Common has to be one of my favorite rappers of ALL time. I had the chance to meet him at Park at the 14th in DC about a fortnight ago for his new album (The Dreamer/The Believer) listening party and as usual, I'm already hooked.

One of my friends from the University of Florida is the Lifestyles Editor at Sister 2 Sister magazine and when we randomly met at the Park she informed me that she was interviewing Common. I was like, really? Nice. And then of course, always in itp'85 mode, I asked "Where's your photographer at?" And the rest, they say is history :D.

My favorite track on the album, for now, is Blue Sky...the tight beats resonate with wise smartly articulated lyrics: "...dream light beams, night life schemes...this is my inception, I'm writing my dreams..."

Greek Life: Being An Iota & The New Boys

November was an exciting month! My line brother got married (now we're counting down who is next) and it was a beautiful quaint ceremony. And while we were in Gainesville, Florida (at my alma mater UF), our fraternity chapter welcomed four new members into the fold. Like welcoming a new member into the family, as Greeks, we take new membership seriously and one of the remarkable moments (amongst many, for me it is also graduation) regardless of how long you've been in an organization, is the probate show. When you see a potential come into their own and publicly declare their affiliation to a brotherhood/sisterhood you hold dear; it reminds you of your journey and an appreciation of how far you've come. In our case, in upholding Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Brotherhood and Fidelity.

Of course my camera(s) came along. This time I was equipped with a D90 & a 1.4 50mm fixed lens I was excited about. One of my frat brothers who has recently picked up photography also came with a D90, but he'd left his mount-on flash at home. I had an idea, something my dad had spoken frequently of doing at a wedding! I swapped cameras with my friend and mounted a 17-50mm 3.5 on mine and set his (with the 1.4/50mm) set to gray-scale pictures only. All my shots would be in black & white!

Having Bassy (@SavvyShotsPhoto ) taking pictures with a mount-on flash gave me the flexibility to capture raw emotion (or as much as I could very quickly) without the distraction of color. More importantly, it let me shoot at low light setting without getting too many blurry images. At different times we swapped cameras and tips as we captured as much of the event as possible. We both ended up with about 1000 pictures from the event, let me know what you think @itakephotos1985:

So I've been multitasking a lot, apparently any one born in the 80's/90's can attest to not just being an internet/technology baby, but also a multitasking addiction: we text without look at the keypad of our phones, write term papers and work reports while tweeting about the nearest natural disaster or posting a quote on Facebook for our numerous 'friends' to ruminate.

Well my youngest sister and my summer project turned into a full fledged company so I had the privilege of revamping my itake photos est. 1985 website so some eye candy here:

In college we had a phrase: live like its a movie: epic!
I recently decided to have fun with some of the footage I have been experimenting/recording on my HTC cell phone. I run it through iMovie on my laptop and viola...look out for feature length behind the scenes of itake photos est. 1985 photo shoots at a theater near you, but especially on here.

I haven't updated here in a while and I apologize, besides a logo revamp, I'm working on a website revamp as well and want to save some of the spectacular awesomeness for the new improved itake photos est. 1985!

In the meantime, I increased itp's visibility by registering with thumbtack a few months ago. Pleasantly surprised I was recently ranked #1 photography by Thumbtack. I actually graduated with Pascalie from UF's Poli Sci department, I think we sat together during commencement. You can imagine my elation when she asked me to photograph her [again]; this time as she's earned her Masters from American University.

So Big Little Web Developers *ahem* my sister and I needed an in-studio photo session for our marketing portfolio/identity for our new project. (back story to Big Little here)

When Adarku came by the studio I wanted us to be in pictures together, and with her help and ideas we created poster signs/in-palm writings to help establish our brand identity...us...and what we do, website development.

With hand-made signs & equipped with fun, we let the "delayed time shutter" snap away!

2011 Good Deeds and more

Desmond and I were recipients of a Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc scholarship in high school and being Ghanaians, we've hit it off ever since. To say we've been partners in (positive) 'crime' is an understatement.
Last year, after a trip to Ghana, Des informed me he was starting a non-profit unity bridge initiative(an organization actively vested in making a change in the lives of the underprivileged youth in Ghana).
Due to my impossibly busy schedule (at the newspaper/radio station) I declined an invitation on the organization's board and volunteered to partner with him for the Holidays Books and lightly used Clothes Drive instead. Through ads on radio, we collected boxes full of items that will go towards helping single teenage mothers on the streets of Ghana's capital, Accra. itake photos est 1985 offered 20% on all photography contracts to donors. We'll be hosting another drive soon so stay tuned for details, after all the snazzy banner has already been made ;-)

Kwabena Kwabena in concert

My man Kwabena Kwabena finally performed in the States.

For those who aren't familiar with him yet, you've probably heard his songs: "Aso" with Kontihene, "Do no bi" which was the soundtrack for Shirley Frimpong-Manso's "Perfect Picture"

One of the things I like about Kwabena Kwabena, I had an opportunity to interview him on a radio show (Drive Time with Komla); is that he is humble, talented and a pleasant person to speak with.

What I didn't like though, as has become the constant with Ghanaians promoting artists abroad is, was the event venue and set-up. A live band, MTV-unplugged-atmosphere would have been way more ideal than a DJ set-up.

More grease to Kwabena Kwabena's elbows, if you love Ghanaian music and haven't heard of him/his songs, you definitely will soon enough.

2 out of the 3 times when I've taken photos of prominent black people, President Barack Obama and Donna Brazile it hasn't been premeditated. This time though a friend gave me minutes notice and thanks to my lowepro back pack that I carry around everywhere, I had the opportunity to get blog-worthy pictures of Rev. Jesse Jackson at the Willard Hotel at a media and telecommunications conference on Thursday. My thoughts when I saw the famous African American...He must be at least 6'4": that's a tall dude, TV doesn't do him justice (pun intended) :-).

I guess I can officially say I'm now about-that-DC-life.

If you've read any of my earlier posts on Greek life, you've probably figured out that I'm a Theta man and when one of my homeboys from VA, a proud Sigma, asked me to take pictures of him and significant other ( she's a Zeta), I showed up with a brown & gold version of my itake photos est. 1985 t-shirt. True to form the couple's attire, like the color scheme of their planned wedding next year, was blue. And hence the double entendre in the blog post's title.

One thing I learnt during the fun shoot as the couple were laughing and hugging the duration of the session...it's easy and incredibly promising to look forward to the future with someone you love, especially if that someone is also your best friend.

Kua - and the mini miracle that happened

So I'm not a huge purse/accessory person (for obvious reasons) and when I discovered for a second year in a row that I had to come up with equally phenomenal gifts for my mother AND...wait for it, my girlfriend's birthdays on Sept 17th, I was almost in despair.

Two years in the game isn't long enough to be adept at hitting a home run when it comes to picking a birthday gift for two women who mean the world in your life. And though I had gotten away with flowers etc in the past, this year seemed to be a particularly more challenging in my attempt to switch things up a bit.

When Ruby Buah, creative genius behind kua designs, called me to cover a shop and mingle event in DC last week, I was cautiously elated. I have been a fan of the photography used to showcase her products on her website (purses on a clothesline, brilliantly African *check 2009 collection on her website*) and was pleased she wanted me to photograph her first DC event ever!

Though I had to cajole my mom that spending a few hours away from her on her birthday would be more than worth it. The purses I got for her, and ahem the girlfriend, did all the convincing!

Enough banter, to the female fans/bloggers: tell me if Ruby's purses don't make a very strong case to be purchased?

Nothing like the clothesline, but stacked the purses hold their own weight.

Angie happens to be an old long lost friend who I finally met at the event, and she loves her purses/style...in no particular order.

Ruby had African-print-inspired broaches as well.

Naming ceremonies are on of the more prominent occasions in the Ghanaian community. I tell my friends you can find out a lot about a person just by hearing his name: his family's religion, ethnic group, possibly his day of birth and his family's origin. Eg. Kofi Gabriel Adedevor - infers that buddy was born on Friday, his family gave him a Christian name and his father's family may be traced to the Ewes in the Volta region.

I got to cover a few naming ceremonies over the summer and this is one of them.

The baby's grandfather (from the dad's side) shares a word about the family, and in this case shares that there are only boys in his family; he has a twin and two sons and thus relinquishes baby naming privileges to the other grandfather(mom's side) as the baby's mother has only sisters in her family.

The grandfather, whom the baby is named after, emotionally shares the meaning of his name Oheneba...and how proud he is to have a grandson.

The parents looking on while the family 'elders' share family history, challenges and triumphs.

The head of the Pentecost church, the family's church, calls the child by his name for the first time...Oheneba.

The father, smitten by the emotional bug, also expresses his joy and the pride of having his first born son.

Family together with the bride's parents and sisters, in matching cloth. Usually white is the favored color for naming ceremonies, in this case the family patterns are adorned with baby blue too.

After a long day, close to six hours of congratulations, having guests dine with you and wish you well, Oheneba is finally visibly tired....my sentiments exactly! He's a trooper, I wish him all the best and when giving the chance, look forward to documenting his successes.

the Presidential Effect

Earlier on in the month, my frat brother who works for the Tulsa Shock reserved tickets for the Shock/Mystics game at the Convention Center in DC. Jumping on the opportunity to fellowship with Gator alumn, I was more excited about the stories to share post-undergrad than the WNBA basketball game....and then it happened. Outside the Convention Center word spread that President Obama and his youngest daughter, Malia would be in attendance!

My priorities changed as I wanted to get my first one-on-one opportunity shoot (ahem a picture of) the president of Kenyan (and Hawaiian) origin. Realizing how far away from the court side my seat was and how ill-equipped I was to get decent pictures, I grudgingly took out my camera in hopes of getting any pictures of him to share with you all.

The Mystic mascot mistakenly shook hands with almost everyone on the first row except Malia, and was quickly reminded by the audience to go back and greet the Commander and Chief and his daughter.

Possibly one of the more famous back-of-the-heads ever photographed. I was envious of how close buddy had gotten to the prez.

The decent 'money shot' of the day and I'll explain why in a bit.

Just before this picture, I froze...sigh. I was close enough to President Obama and he seemed to stretch out his hand toward me! So instead of taking possibly my rendition of the HOPE poster picture of my own. I ended up with another pass-me-by picture.

Now if that isn't the presidential effect, I don't know what is. I couldn't beat myself down for too long though, at least I got a handshake from the most powerful man in the world. What did you do that was awesome this month?

The Ghanaian equivalent to Teddy P or Luther Vandross, Kojo Antwi is our multi-award winning romantic songs crooner who I grew up listening to.

One of the opening acts, Koby Maxwell...a local artist in the DMV.

Papa Shee was another opening act, and surprisingly introduced Mzbel who was in attendance.

Though the venue was trash & the sounds men were disappointing, Kojo Antwi did his thing. For an extensive review of the concert, you should read my man MIghTy African's blog post.

A True Worship Experience

A friend from my old church happens to be the prez for True Worshippers....a group of young men and women in the DMV are who are dedicated to putting on an annual gospel concert during/around July 4th (held July 17th this year). I missed the first concert last year cos I was still residing in Florida. When buddy asked me to be the official photographer for the event I jumped at the opportunity to capture the moment, and have front row access to a wonderful praise & worship session.

Moses O.K. a young gospel artist from Kumasi, Ghana led the charge!

Seasoned veteran and former leader of the Soul Winners group in Ghana, Kenneth Appiah took over.

Nii Okai, another prolific Ghanaian gospel musician also took it home and ushered an anointed presence during worship.

All in all True Worshippers: A night in His presence 2010 was a fun, charged atmosphere and I had a phenomenal time.

Prior to the concert, Yaw brought Moses O.K. and Nii Okai to Sunlight radio station, one of the projects I'm working on with my dad at Media Afrika LLC, for an interview. Using my alias as Komla the OdadeE I had the opportunity to interview the guest artists before the concert date. To Yaw and True Worshippers thank you...for a concert very well done!

Ghana Stars (spoken word & music)

My home boy Osekre had a book launch in NY a few days back and I had the chance to photograph event. The best part of the nostalgic Ghanaian songs and witty rhymes was the opportunity to also meet Blitz the Ambassador -a black star (no affiliation with the football team) and witness first-hand the Achimota High School graduate's lyrical genius.

So I'm still bruised over Ghana's loss to Uruguay but Blitz's salute to the boys in the video below is more than appropriate:

If you've been following me on twitter or facebook then you've probably figured out that I'm a huge football fanatic when it comes to the #worldcup. I've been an ardent, unwavering fan since the first game between Ghana and Serbia.

In 2006, when Ghana beat the USA to qualify past group stages, I bought a flag and heralded it onto University of Florida campus. Four years and a graduation later, a similar showdown with Ghana being victorious last weekend couldn't have made me happier.

Being the dare-devil that I am, I went to Washington DC, the nation's capital....Dupont Circle where jumbotrons and huge screen tvs showcased the world cup football matches hosted in South Africa. I was surrounded by {obviously} team America supporters with my obnoxious flag and braved 90 minutes plus extra time till, the ESPN described "small country a little bigger than Oregon" beat the super power USA!

I was ecstatic, a little nervous for my well-being but very proud of the young black stars team and the fact that I was born in Ghana, the Black Stars of Africa

Citizins at Tabaq Bistro

Prior to the world cup in South Africa, there were a few events that took over my life and this is one of them. Kojo, my home boy from my old church, had a fashion show at Tabaq Bistro in DC. I was on the p's and q's (always wanted to use that term), ahem on the photography.

This picture actually captures the night: volunteers for models donning Kojo's Citizins label and DJ's that coupled as dancers whenever they had the chance. To check out more of Kojo's stuff click here.

Of course, nothing will truly be Ghanaian if there isn't an ingenious way of getting stuff done. Case in point: observe her excellent proficiency in using headphones - not a microphone - in announcing the beginning of the fashion show segment of the evening. Adds a whole new meaning to improv....

Three Musketeers: All for one, one for All

So I had a chance to take pictures at my first baby naming ceremony. Not to be outdone by any subsequent ones, I gladly jumped on the opportunity to photograph my favorite triplets! I took a family picture of the kids a few weeks back and even discovered my little mus e . [insert chuckle here]

To my amusement the siblings, names listed in the top picture, have quite the personality of their own. Though generally well-behaved, I can't wait to see what they would be like over the coming years as teenagers and young adults - very alike and yet incredibly different.

Big Pimpin'

I had the opportunity to take pictures at a spot in Old Town, VA, known as Carafe, two weeks ago, And I look forward to frequenting in the future. The atmosphere is fantastic and the opportunity to 'create your own wine' is a convincing sell for a chill, what I usually call 'civilized', occasion or an all out date. Nana Phubu, a dude I met at a Christmas eve party last year, was hosting his birthday party at the venue and though a handful of people showed up at the very last hour, finding this gem in Virginia, made the trip more than worthwhile.

I really like the 'M' word: matriculation. To me, it gives the impression one has accomplished more than just the required courses and a piece of paper with the college dean's signature. Matriculation is Major lol, at least in my head it is...and thinking back to my own college graduation last year, it is indeed a momentous occasion. Especially for us (say I) first generation folks. So witnessing my friends graduate was equally fantastic and looking back I can appreciate and understand the elation they and their family shared!

In the first picture, Cathy....aka Be Chillin' is a wonderful young lady and my memories of her are quite fond, as she's always been kind to share encouraging words regardless of what I set my mind too. The others in the picture Sherine, Christine & Franny (in the 4th) are just as fabulous!

Phil's in the next picture and we shared many a day on the basketball courts at SouthWest Rec, he more often than I, and in my opinion could have been a walk-on for Billy Donovan's team now.

Christina (3rd picture) was my muse early junior year lol. She started Poets Inc. with another good friend Ashley, and together they constantly remind me to never lose sight of the power of words and expression.

Whew, this post is a little longer than usual, but I'd wanted to take a minute and congratulate the class of 2010. To quote my mentor and role model Nelson Mandiba Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
Go change the world!

With help from awesome people in Australia, I have a website that allows me to edit and upload pictures as well as tweak the structure and background with relative ease. By creating these large jpeg images in Photoshop CS3 I figured I would exercise my creative juices by creating a new image every month to reflect the majority of shoots for the month. And May's theme is 'Graduating Season'. You can find Jan-May backgrounds here.

Towards the end of the year, I'll create a backgrounds album, if you will, hopefully that will give you a snapshot of what my past year in terms of photography was like.

I got a chance to take pictures of Kofi & Crown Glory, an award winning gospel group a few weeks back. It was a challenging shoot that started off at a church in Maryland

The video production team, Motion Media, was completely in control of the lighting and I had to improvise as much as possible to compensate. I'm grateful the D80 is pretty decent with low light, wont complain when I can upgrade to a full body D3 series...sigh

We left the church and changed venues to the National Harbor....that's when Kofi and the crew had the most fun. I was cracking up when I found out from Kofi himself, that his style(crown belt, shades, swagger and dances) was apparently borrowed from his 4 year old son.

Last Friday night, I got hopelessly lost on foot by 8th N.E. and Connecticut in DC. I was on my way to an Africare colleague's birthday party.

Fuming and cursing myself for having the knack for wandering around in unfamiliar neighborhoods, even with Google maps on my phone...I suddenly realized I was walking side by side with a TV personality. Stuttering and gladly holding myself in check... I quickly introduce myself ...star-struck while instinctively reaching my back-pack for the D80.

Here I am with Donna Brazile, a friend and her dog Chip - who happens to love posing for my camera- and I start my schpeel about working with Africare ('cos of my t-shirt), being from Ghana and to my amazement Donna shares how 'Ghanaian' she is and how she loves my country! She recounts here visits to Aburi and is gracious enough in allowing me to photograph her and Chip for a blog post.

Now, I look forward to hearing her counter-argue conservative points on CNN, all the while remembering her parting words "...I'm from Ghana too."

So my homeboy Eddie Ekuban signed up for an Art Expo at the Gaylord, National Harbor and encouraged me to showcase some of my photography with his. Instead of using traditional shots I normally take, I explored something completely different. I made sand creations from Adinkra Symbols and photographed them especially for the expo. It was therapeutic and invigorating to actually create something and have people appreciate my novelty work.

So I got to take pictures of Fashion X in Gainesville when I was last there to judge the step show, late February. Shout out to the FX crew, as I was a model myself my junior year. Emmanuel and Jackie are one of my favorite couples in the Washington Metro area. Before their wedding shoot they wanted to get a couples photo shoot and as it was still cold outside, I invited them to the studio.

Their chemistry in front of the camera was an obvious testament to the strong emotions they share. I've been invited to photograph their wedding as well...It is safe to say that Emmanuel was successful in sweeping Jackie completely off her feet!

I got the chance to go back to Gainesville to support Black Gator Grads in honoring a longtime faculty member and activist, during her years as a student and as a resident of Gainesville, Dr. Betty Fullwood.
She's finally retiring as as faculty member- and my fondest memories aren't from when we called her Dr. Dowdell during the minority program for freshmem, PAACT, but rather from talking to her one-on-one for a photo project for Blacklisted! I left her office with a sense of warmth, intelligence and selflessness that will be missed in her absence.

Different cultures fascinate me. I first met Nida in high school and we became really good friends; so much so she'd sneak into my 7th period class almost every day senior year. Years later we are all grown up, and yet we're still very much the same personalities.

Debbie came by the studio last week. I learnt an important lesson: that personality carries through any picture and what may separate someone who has a camera and a photographer is the ability to glean expressions from your subject. Debbie is extremely camera shy. The first umpteenth shots were of her covering her face entirely. After cracking jokes, ahem very corny jokes, I was able to convince the high school junior that its ok to smile at the camera.

I had the angels come to the studio for a marketing campaign I'm working on for the month of February, en par with a revamped website. We (ahem, more them than I) hand-made a hair band with petals from Micheal's and a glue gun; then I let them loose for one of my funnest photo sessions.
For now I am their favorite photographer ever! Along with best brother, hehehe. And that makes me happy, very happy.

I have been overwhelmed by the news reports after the earthquake in Haiti. My girlfriend and most of my chapter frat brothers are also Haitian. Whenever I hear the song "I'm a Zoe" I'd beat my chest and wave the flag of my adopted nation as high as I can. Besides texting "Haiti" to 90999 I can only offer prayers of support to those in Haiti and their loved ones. Take 5 seconds, your contribution may be the difference in someone's life.

I remember back in prep school in Ghana, almost all the teenage girls were required to cut their hair and back then I didn't think there was much wrong with it. My mother, when she attended prep school, got hers cut as well and the tradition has continued till this day. Of course most ladies in the States tend to only do so in college, after quite a bit of soul searching, as it can have a noticeable impact on their appearance. Chris Rock's movie Good Hair is out, and this post celebrates all who've braved the criticism to cut their hair and are very proud with it.

I didn't know I was a Maxi Priest fan till I was actually bobbing my head to familiar hit songs of his during the performance this past Saturday. The non-conventional Reggae artists with #1 hits including "Wild World", "Just a little longer" and "Close to You", had middle-aged women crooning to all his songs at Zanzibar On the Waterfront.
He's one of my dad's favorite artists and of course pops was shaking and bopping to all Maxi had to offer as well, sigh. Considering this was the first time I'd ever seen Maxi Priest in person, I could not help but find some resemblance with him and Ice Cube... Maybe a 'dreaded-up' Ice Cube could pass for a Reggae artist.

I deliberately waited on CNN and every other news channels to quit using Michael Jackson's legacy and life story to increase their ratings, before I posted this blog. Everyone knew and loved Michael Jackson- from Africa across to Asia- he was the other MJ that I grew up respecting for his incredible gift. And it was unfortunate growing up to see such an icon criticized and made a media-spectacle of. To the National Enquirer and all others that never gave him a chance, there isn't much to say other than the fact that one of the world's greatest musicians ever was also one of the world's greatest philanthropists to ever live. I apologize for the two week Hiatus. I've been traveling a lot these past 14 days-from Winston-Salem NC to Miami, FL- half of which I spent commuting on the Amtrak or in traffic, sigh.

These past few days have been my most challenging and inspirational this summer. For starters the laptop had a virus, literally hours from getting back from the repairs! One of the indigenous products made in Ghana is the Kente cloth. Apparently, the first Kente maker got his queue from the spider and learned how to interweave strings to create elaborate patterns. Back in the day Kente was worn by royalty on special occasions. In modern times, more people wear Kente and I caught two people adorning the sometimes colorful cloth at an event.

I went to a Catholic church choir robing event with my dad over the weekend. It was a day long affair with choirs from different denominations in attendance; Pentecostal, Presbyterian and Methodist. Saint, his actual name, is a friend of mine and also a musician/producer who came by the office earlier today. He had a hilarious story to tell about how he cut his hand opening a can of corned beef with pliers [lol very reminiscent of my days in boarding school] and hence the picture on the left. Shortly afterwards my dad set up his studio for a shoot with a client, Saint and I snuck in to take a picture with my camera and a 18-55mm fixed lens. Juxtaposing the two, we both laughed at how quickly his fortune had changed during the day, well thanks to the camera.

I had the chance to cover my first wedding with my dad last weekend. I felt a little more relaxed knowing that I had the flexibility to take pictures other than those of the bride & groom as his pictures would count as well. Very few can argue how photogenic kids are, much less smiling kids in wedding attire.
